When the miserable winter weather starts to get old and you just can’t wait for that summer sun, it’s time to reach for the magic cure, also known as the “hot toddy.” Who would’ve thought that such simple ingredients (spirit, sweetener, hot water, and lemon peel,) would be the cure all your winter blues.

The hot toddy, is one of the most underrated winter drinks, and is also falsely named more often than you would think. Just because a hot drink has booze in it doesn’t mean it earns the prestigious “hot toddy” title. Never have we come across a true hot toddy that had anything to do with cinnamon, cream, or tea bags. Keeping it simple is the way to go.

The perfect ratio consists of just two ounces spirit, a tiny bit of sweetener, and three ounces hot water. Don’t forget to add a little hot water in the mug before so the cooler spirit doesn’t turn your beverage into a lukewarm toddy. You can even experiment with different spirits (whiskey, aged rum, cognac, or gin for example,) and choose between sweeteners like sugar, honey, or maple syrup, to truly customize your own masterpiece. Garnish with a lemon peel and sip away your stress.

So can a hot toddy actually cure the common cold? There are definitely benefits to drinking hot beverages when you have a cold, and the alcohol may relax you the same way Nyquil does. So it may not drive away your cold immediately, but it will help you feel much better. If you ask us, that’s a win!

Next time you feel even the slightest bit under the weather, you have an excuse to indulge. Whether it’s actually a cure or not, at least you can count on spirits to lift your spirits!
