The worlds most talked about fair, Art Basel Miami, is making its return the first week of December this year. Since the first launch in 2002, there has been so much artistic diversity, this event truly has something to offer anyone who attends. Imagine four days of some of the most beautiful and creative masterpieces imaginable. Then, imagine them all at pretty reasonable prices. Sounds pretty sweet, right? Not only can you get art pieces as low as $1,000, you get to have the glory of bringing it home from one of the most well known art fairs in the world!
If it’s your first time attending the art fair, it can be a bit overwhelming. There’s a big show at the Miami Beach Convention center, but we recommend checking out the satellite art fairs that often take over all the hotel rooms in a beachside motor lodge. There are more than 25 of them to consider, but here’s a few that we like:
NADA Art Fair
If you’re a serious collector, then this is the one for you. This fair is prestigious and more exclusive than the others, which also means higher priced.
Aqua at the Aqua Hotel: This fair is within walking distance of the Lincoln Road mall, which can mean a break from the crowd if you’re feeling overwhelmed. This is a must see for the more bohemian.
This is art with an architectural component. If you prefer your art with more intellectual content, then you will not want to miss this one.
Located at the Essex House and Clevelander Hotels. This fair is primarily focused on emerging art with a bit more of an East Coast focused as compared to the Aqua Fair. As an added bonus, this one is free to get in!
This is the original and longest-running contemporary art fair of all of them. It also tends to be visited by a more established art crowd.
This fair began soon after Art Basel came to Miami. This is one of the more respected, hip fairs. There’s also more than just art for sale here as this fair offers original cultural programs, a video lounge, and performance art.
If you don’t have a clue about art but you have a keen sense for a good party, then you will still have a great time. With the amount of money flowing through the town in early December, you’ll find your fair share of fun.
Tuesday through Thursday you will find a much more formal atmosphere, such as art benefits, usually to launch one of the art fairs. These events aren’t really too exciting for a much younger crowd, but they’re for a good cause. We recommend Googling “best parties during Art Basel Miami” a week before you go.
Art Basel Miami is comparable to the American art version of the Cannes Film Festival. Even though art is the purpose of the event the competitive glamour, big money, and big names seem to be a key aspect. If you like being in that type of flashy environment, then you better start making your travel arrangements. We’ll see you there!
