The World Series of Poker (WSOP) which began in 2005, is held annually in Las Vegas. In 1970, Benny Binion brought together seven of the best poker players around for a tournament. There was a start and stop time, and the winner was determined by secret ballot.
The WSOP has come a long way since the 70’s and now, the winners are awarded a WSOP bracelet and a cash prize based on each buy-in amount.
Each year, the tournament increases the number of participants and the number of events that are held. The “Main Event” of the tournament, which is a $10,000 no-limit hold’em, brings in thousands of visitors each year. The winner receives a multi-million dollar cash prize, and a WSOP bracelet. Some people now consider the bracelet a more valuable prize than the cash. Winning the Main Event makes you the “World Champion of Poker.” Pretty impressive title, right!
